Around fifty cars have been marked with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm law enforcement.
Vehicles, exterior walls and postal boxes were marked, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they reported in a statement.
Officers report they were notified late on Wednesday evening, when a resident discovered that a automobile in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a reddish substance.
The substance had been placed in the shape of a banned symbol, they reported.
Officers then found many other smeared automobiles and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under laws prohibiting the public display of Nazi-era symbols.
Officials report initial examinations show the fluid was likely blood from a person.
"At present there remains no lead as to its origin; investigators are currently not informed of any physical harm in relation with the event," they stated.
Municipal representatives said they were trying "to unravel the mystery" and have appealed to the community for details.
A high-ranking official commented the attack rendered him stunned and had to be solved promptly.
"This incident hits the center of Hanau and revives the pain of the extremist terrorist attack in 2020," he wrote on social media, referring to the murder of nine victims by a shooter targeting residents of migrant background in February 2020.
