The Former President's Woke Warning Overlooks The Continent's True Danger: Technological Decline.

Donald Trump's national security strategy offers a flawed assessment of Europe. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and so-called "progressive" policies pose an grave threat to European civilization. Yet, this perspective is based on a serious misinterpretation of the situation. The true danger facing the EU is not societal but economic and technological lag.

A Glaring Growth Gap Between Europe and the US

Statistics reveal a stark picture. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by 87%, compared to a paltry thirteen and a half percent growth for the European Union. During this time, EU GDP per capita dropped from over three-quarters to just half of the US level. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now boasts a greater average income than major European economies like France and Italy.

Currently, about 50% of the world’s 50 largest tech companies are US-based, while only four are from Europe.

The Innovation Deficit: The Core Question

This widening disparity stems from superior productivity growth in the US, fueled by breakthroughs and better use of resources. The scene of world technology dominance is overwhelmingly American. Over the past fifty years, hundreds of American startups have scaled into companies valued at more than ten billion dollars, versus just 14 in Europe.

This disparity raises a pressing issue: As the competition for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, what is Europe positioned? Experts widely concede it is largely a contest between two between the US and China, with Europe starting at a clear disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Innovation Gap

A number of key reasons explain this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a much more robust and agile system for financing new ventures. Europe still lacks a genuine capital markets union, a factor that caps the scale of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented regulation hamper European business. A American entrepreneur can launch a product under one set of laws to access a market of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a larger population, is divided among twenty-seven different national regimes, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on risk-taking vary greatly. In parts of Europe, business failure was once met with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's chronic underinvestment in defense has weakened its ability in breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

Despite these challenges, there are causes for hope. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have started to propose substantial change. Notable analyses on EU competitiveness and the internal market highlight the need for sweeping reforms.

With the right incentives and rule changes, Europe's strengths could support much higher degrees of commercial innovation.

The continent still possesses considerable strengths: skilled human capital, excellent schools and universities, and world-class labs. Alongside a large internal market and substantial household savings, these elements could trigger a new wave of venture creation.

Importantly, even if Europe does not take the lead in developing next-generation technologies, it can still dramatically increase economic output by implementing and tailoring innovations from other regions.

An Inflection Point

Europe now faces a decisive crossroads. As the saying goes, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, Europe's slide in innovation has been gradual. But, without bold steps to address its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could give way to a sudden and irreversible decline in global economic relevance.
