The fast bowler Expected to Feature a Major Role in Ashes Series

Test match action

Pat Cummins has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chief selector the selector has declared that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that Cummins might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on November 21 in Western Australia.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the prospects of participating.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and there are permutations at play, not just the back issue, but additional elements," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he will feature a key capacity. With luck starting in Perth. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand recently after scans revealed a lower back issue.

He has a history of recurring issues, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of several home seasons in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the contest.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the opener.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against India as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "small issue and stated that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the opening match as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the starting games anyway. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
