Right-leaning reactions to the limited disclosure of documents involving the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with some backers of the former Trump administration highlighting the noticeable appearance of former President Clinton and additional Democrats in photographs, while others lamented how heavy redactions cast former President Trump and Republicans in a negative manner.
Justice Department Justifies Redactions with Strong Rhetoric
Administration officials defended the redactions with intense exaggerated language. “At no point in U.S. history has a President or the Justice Department been this open with the American people about such a delicate law enforcement matter,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a detailed letter describing the redaction process.
Concerns Prompted by Redactions
While the former president's name and image appear in portions of the materials, the extensive redactions raise serious questions about the information may be hidden behind them. A number of Republicans immediately called for greater openness.
“People are raging and walking away,” wrote Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a online statement, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie said the censorship break the statute, and suggested that a subsequent Congress may attempt to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Unfortunately, today’s document release grossly fails to adhere to both the spirit and the letter of the law,” he added.
A Faction of Rightwing Commentators Rally Behind the Disclosure
However, a segment of conservative pundits and Trump loyalists swung firmly behind the Justice Department's actions.
The release—originating from a DOJ led by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes hundreds of documents that are entirely redacted, and numerous of the men shown in pictures have their faces obscured.
But a few do not, featuring prominent individuals like Bill Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The presence of Clinton, especially, allowed some conservative voices to go on the offensive.
“It’s quite ironic how the Democrats falsely accused President Trump of being a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to release Epstein files that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” wrote right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“New documents show Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a female that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 reason Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a hot tub: Blackmail.”
Former President Campaign Issues Statement
Clinton has consistently said he was aware of no criminal activity by Epstein and has never been accused to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The administration hasn’t been hiding these documents for months only to dump them late on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” his representative Angel Ureña stated in a comment.
“The release is about shielding themselves from future revelations, or from what they will try and conceal forever. So they can release as many grainy decades-old photographs as they desire, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Not previously, not ever be,” the statement added.
Broader Rightwing Comment Remains Muted
However, overall comment on the right was comparatively muted following the release, particularly when juxtaposed against the loud calls for action that came before the congressional approval to enact a bill requiring the files' publication.
The commentator, who recently accepted press credentials at the Defense Department, had been among the loudest advocates for a complete disclosure. Earlier this year, she criticized the administration generally and Bondi in particular after a group of conservative influencers were given hard-copy binders of materials that contained little new information.
