Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Displacement Confirmed

The island nation has been hit hard by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, which left at least two people dead and displaced more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities reported that the powerful weather system caused extensive flash flooding, storm surges, mudslides, and fierce gale-force winds, prompting the relocation of 1.4 million residents across the country.

Widespread Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In Pandan, Catanduanes, a severely affected area, disaster response teams documented rising waters climbing to rooftop levels and residences washed out by strong flows.

“Our personnel rescued 14 individuals who were trapped on the roof surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official explained. “A father also called in panic, saying his home’s roof was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We saved him along with four family members.”

As of Monday morning, authorities announced two fatalities: one from drowning on the island and a second individual who died after her home gave way in eastern Samar.

Typhoon Strength and Projected Path

The super typhoon weakened to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning while moving over the main island, home to the national capital.

Per meteorological authorities, its maximum winds decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts peaked at more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is projected to continue weakening as it moves in the direction of Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The national disaster response service indicated it was still working to assess damage on buildings and roads.

Roughly 6,000 evacuation centres were activated to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

The typhoon hit just days after Typhoon Kalmaegi, which killed hundreds of lives and left dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Searches for the missing persons were halted recently over risks for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is causing tropical storms stronger and frequent. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to impact the nation this year.

Researchers have found that the frequency of intense cyclones hitting the Philippines has increased by more than 100% over the last two decades.

International estimates suggest that intense storms result in an average of US$3.5 million in losses for the Philippines annually.

The Philippine president declared an emergency declaration last week because of the extensive devastation caused by Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from the new storm.
